FAQs

Straight answers about Rehab Coach NZ — home-based coaching, rehab, ACC, pelvic floor, and workplaces.

Getting started

Do I need to be fit before I start?

Absolutely not.

Personalised coaching is designed around your current ability. Whether you are starting from scratch, returning to exercise or already reasonably active, your programme can be adjusted to where you are now and progressed as your ability improves.

Do I need a home gym or exercise equipment?

No.

We can work with bodyweight and minimal equipment, or use the equipment you already have. If you have a home gym, we can also help you make better use of it and develop a structured programme around what you have got.

What happens during my first session?

We will start by understanding you.

We will discuss your goals, current activity, exercise history, any relevant limitations and what you would like to achieve. We will also look at how you move and what equipment or space you have available.

From there, we will establish an appropriate starting point and direction for your training.

Will you come to my home?

For home-based coaching, yes — that is the point.

Training can be delivered in your home or suitable home environment, depending on your location and the type of coaching required.

What if I am embarrassed about how unfit I am?

You do not need to be embarrassed.

We meet people at all different starting points. Our job is not to judge where you are — it is to help you work out where to go next.

There is no prize for pretending you are fitter than you are.

Honesty gives us something useful to work with.

How do I know whether Rehab Coach NZ is right for me?

If you are unsure, talk to us.

You do not need to have a perfect goal, a home gym or a detailed exercise plan before making contact.

Tell us where you are at, what you would like to change and what is currently getting in the way.

We will help you work out whether personalised coaching is appropriate for you — and what the next step could look like.

Rehabilitation

Can you help me if I have an injury or have not exercised for a long time?

We can work with people who need a gradual and carefully considered return to movement and exercise.

Where your situation involves an injury, medical condition, surgery or rehabilitation needs, we will consider that as part of your programme and, where appropriate, work alongside your existing healthcare professionals.

The aim is to build capacity — not prove how much you can tolerate on day one.

What does Rehab Coach NZ actually do?

Rehab Coach NZ helps people improve their ability to move, function and participate in everyday life.

That can include rehabilitation following injury or surgery, chronic pain, strength and fitness, return to activity, workplace-related issues, pelvic floor training and personalised exercise programmes.

Our focus is on understanding the person, identifying what is getting in the way and creating a practical pathway forward.

Can you help with chronic pain?

We can help people who are living with persistent or recurring pain by focusing on movement, physical capacity, confidence and achievable progression.

Chronic pain can be complicated, so we do not assume that simply making you stronger will solve everything.

We will consider your individual circumstances and, where appropriate, work alongside your healthcare professionals.

What if I have been discharged from physiotherapy but I am still not confident?

This is one of the situations where additional support can be useful.

You may have been given exercises and medically discharged, but that does not necessarily mean you are confident returning to normal life.

We can help bridge that gap by progressively building strength, movement, confidence and functional capacity.

Being out of treatment does not always mean you are finished rehabilitating.

How long will my rehabilitation take?

There is not a standard answer because rehabilitation is not a race with the same finish line for everyone.

The timeframe depends on your starting point, injury or circumstances, goals, consistency and how your body responds to progression.

We will establish realistic goals and review your progress as we go.

Our aim is not simply to get you “out of pain.”

Out of pain is not the end of rehabilitation — it is often just the beginning of getting your life back.

ACC & healthcare

Do I need a referral to see Rehab Coach NZ?

Not necessarily.

You can contact us directly to discuss your situation and find out whether our services are appropriate.

For ACC-funded rehabilitation, a referral from the appropriate practitioner is required.

If you are unsure what pathway applies to you, contact us and we can talk you through it.

Do you provide ACC rehabilitation?

Yes.

Rehab Coach NZ is an ACC provider and can provide rehabilitation services following an appropriate practitioner referral.

Our involvement is not necessarily about taking over from your existing healthcare team. We can form part of the wider rehabilitation journey, helping you build the physical capacity and confidence required to return to your everyday activities, work or other goals.

Can you work alongside my physio, occupational therapist or doctor?

Absolutely.

Rehabilitation works best when the people involved understand what everyone is trying to achieve.

Where appropriate, we can work alongside your existing healthcare professionals and focus on the practical movement, strength, conditioning and functional aspects of your rehabilitation.

We are not here to replace your healthcare team — we are here to add another piece to the puzzle.

What happens if my ACC-funded treatment has finished?

Being off ACC funding does not always mean you are finished rehabilitating. You can still contact us directly. We can talk through a private pathway, and where it still applies we can work alongside your existing healthcare team.

Strength & fitness

Can you create a programme for the equipment I already have?

Yes.

If you have invested in a home gym, there is no reason to throw everything out and start again. We can assess what you have and develop a programme around it.

We will also help you understand how and when to progress the exercises.

What if I do not like gyms?

That is completely fine.

You do not need to join a commercial gym to become stronger or fitter. Home-based coaching gives you the opportunity to train in an environment where you feel comfortable, without the crowds, mirrors, unfamiliar equipment or feeling that everyone is watching you.

Can you help me if I've lost fitness?

Yes. We start from where you are now — returning after a gap is a normal reason people get in touch.

Pelvic floor

What is pelvic floor training?

Pelvic floor training involves learning how to understand, activate, relax and strengthen the pelvic floor appropriately.

It is not just something for women after having children.

Pelvic floor function can be relevant to women, men and children, depending on their individual circumstances.

Our approach is practical, educational and personalised rather than simply handing you a list of pelvic floor exercises and saying, “Good luck with those.”

Who can benefit from pelvic floor training?

It depends on the person, not a stereotype. Pelvic floor work can be relevant for women, men and children. We keep it practical and personalised.

Businesses

Do you offer rehabilitation or prehab for businesses?

Yes.

Our Prehab for Business service looks at how people physically interact with their work environment and the demands of their roles.

This can include workstation setup, movement, role-specific physical demands, employee education, individual physical concerns and preventative strategies.

The goal is to identify potential problems before they become bigger problems — because fixing a problem before it becomes an injury is generally easier than trying to fix it afterwards.

Not sure where to start?

That’s okay. You don’t need to know exactly what you need before you contact us. Complete our health questionnaire and we will arrange a free 30-minute consultation.
